"I won't be cleared for any sports until next May," says 14-year-old Hannah Liesche, who tore her ACL during a track meet in the Spring.
ACL injuries are common - there are about 200,000 of them in the U.S. every year - but Hannah was more at risk. That's because adolescent female athletes are four-to-six-times more likely to tear their ACL than male athletes their age.
"There are a lot of theories out there. Some of it is the anatomy, hormonal factors play a role - but the other factors are the biomechanics of how athletes move and land, pivot and turn." said Dr. Eric Samuelson from OrthoNebraska at Fremont Health.
See what else Dr. Samuelson has to say about ACL injuries, including what can be done to prevent them.
