An infectious disease specialist is a doctor of internal medicine with additional training that focuses on various types of infections, including those caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites.

You may be referred to an infectious disease specialist if your infection is difficult to diagnose, is accompanied by a high fever, or does not respond to treatment.
