Treatment for Bloody Noses

In almost any sport there is a chance of getting a bloody nose.

  • Pinch the bridge of the nose to help reduce blood flow.  Don’t pinch the end so you can’t breathe, pinch the hard part just below your eyes.
  • Never tilt your head back.  This can cause the blood to run down your throat and may cause nausea and/or vomiting.
  • Hold gauze under the nose to catch any blood.
  • Small cotton rolls or cotton balls can be inserted into the nose to help the blood clot.  Do not stick anything up far enough that you cannot get it back out.  If the air is very dry, a small amount of skin lube or Vaseline can be applied to the cotton roll or ball to help lubricate the tissues and prevent bleeding.
  • Applying ice to the bridge of the nose can help constrict the blood vessels and reduce blood flow.
  • If a nose bleed is not stopping after attempting the above for a period of time, seek medical care.
  • Sometimes if a person is continually having nose bleeds, they may need to have the vessel cauterized by a physician.
