After Your Surgery

You will arrive in our post anesthesia care unit, where you will be monitored very closely. Once you are starting to wake up, you will be transferred to the recovery area, where your family will be able to join you. You will need to drink something and have a light snack before we dismiss you to go home. All patients must be accompanied by a responsible adult (at least 19 year old) who will receive the postoperative (home care) instructions. This person will also need to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours after your procedure.

  • It is normal to feel discomfort in the area of your surgery.
  • You may also be drowsy or dizzy or have a sore throat, depending on the type of anesthesia you received.
  • Your surgeon will provide specific instructions for your care while recovering at home. It is important you follow these instructions carefully.
  • Rest the remainder of the day.
  • For the first 24 hours after your procedure and while taking narcotics, do not drive, engage in any strenuous activities, drink alcoholic beverages, or make any critical decisions.
  • You may return to work or school as instructed by your physician.
  • Our nurses will attempt to call you 24 to 48 hours after your procedure to check on you.
