Virtually all people (89%) with Parkinson's Disease will have speech problems that begin early in the disease process and will progressively diminish their quality of life. Common problems experienced with Parkinson’s include:
While medicine and surgery have been shown to improve other symptoms of Parkinson Disease, they typically do not help speech problems. More than 25 years of research funded by the National Institute of Health has documented that LSVT LOUD speech therapy provides lasting effective results.
WHAT IS LSVT LOUD?
LSVT LOUD, named for Mrs. Lee Silverman (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment), was developed in 1987. LSVT LOUD improves vocal loudness by stimulating the muscles of the voice box (larynx) and speech mechanism through a systematic hierarchy of exercises. Focused on a single goal “speak LOUD!” – the treatment improves respiratory, laryngeal and articulatory function to maximize speech intelligibility. The treatment does not train people for shouting or yelling; rather, LSVT LOUD uses loudness training to bring the voice to an improved, healthy vocal loudness with no strain.
LSVT LOUD research has demonstrated improvements in speech intelligibility, facial expressions and swallowing function. Overall, LSVT LOUD has demonstrated improved vocal loudness in 90% of patients. There are now over 14,000 LSVT certified clinicians in 62 countries improving the quality of life of many people affected by this condition. While LSVT LOUD has been successfully administered to individuals in all stages of PD, the treatment has been most effective among those who are in early or middle stages of the condition.
HOW TO GET LSVT LOUD
LSVT LOUD is delivered by a certified speech pathologist and includes treatments four days per week for one month (total of 16 sessions), each treatment lasting one hour.
